Arup’s Daniel Lambert has been named the Professional Engineer of the Year for the Sydney Division.

The award from Engineers Australia recognised Daniel’s achievements, innovation, contribution to the wellbeing of communities and to the profession with one of the highest accolades for a professional engineer.

Daniel is Arup’s Australasia Water Leader with experience on key projects throughout Australia and Asia, and a passion for raising the profile of the water industry. He is well-known for his advocacy of sustainable approaches to engineering work, developing innovative blue-green infrastructure opportunities and addressing major drought challenges.

“Receiving the award is a wonderful honour and very exciting. As engineers we are privileged to be able to make not just a technical contribution but really positively impact communities and the environment,” he said.

Engineering isn’t just about concrete and steel, it is about people, relationships, about working with each other and lots of other professionals to solve challenges. ” Daniel Lambert Daniel Lambert Former Australasia Water Leader

A member of several industry committees and expert advisory panels, he has also played a pivotal role in the development of community partnering programs with WaterAid, Engineers without Borders, Habitat for Humanity and World Toilet Organisation.

In the water sector, Daniel has designed and project managed the delivery of sewer, water and storm infrastructure and worked extensively on delivering water reuse schemes, applying best practice approaches to stormwater harvesting, blackwater reuse and greywater reuse schemes.

His diverse project portfolio includes the award-winning Yarra Park Water Recycling Facility in Melbourne, Future of Urban Water in Sydney, the Karachi Waste to Energy Project in Pakistan and the transformative Bandar Lampung Water Treatment Plant in Sumatra Indonesia.

Arup Australasia Chair Peter Chamley said Daniel’s award was well-deserved.

“He is a dynamic leader who is passionate about the essential role water professionals provide to our local and global communities. He is a standout multi-disciplinary engineer, recognised as a thought leader in the industry,” Peter said.

Within Arup, Daniel is also committed to less experienced team members, helping them develop technical and business skills, identify growth opportunities and build networks.

Daniel has previously received the Water Professional of the Year and the Kamal Fernando Mentoring Award from the Australian Water Association, as ‘an exemplar water industry leader’.
