Denmark’s Camp Adventure forest tower opens to visitors

Camp Adventure’s iconic new observation tower was officially inaugurated this weekend in a ceremony attended by Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, together with local stakeholders and representatives from the architectural, engineering and construction teams. 
 
The iconic 45-metre tower, built in less than a year, offers breath-taking panoramic views of the surrounding protected forest of Gisselfeld Kloster. Made of weathered steel and locally source wooden slats, the tower is designed to blend in with the surrounding forests. A sloping walkway takes visitors to the top, offering changing vistas of the forest canopy along the way.

The award-winning observation tower and forest walk will be a new unique destination experience at the heart of Camp Adventure, a treetop adventure park one hour south of Copenhagen.

Arup and architects EFFEKT worked with the client to design the tower’s arresting hourglass outline, with a lattice structure featuring straight structural steel elements to deliver a very efficient build.

Parametric design modelling was a perfect fit for this boundary-pushing design, and helped produce several design iterations until arriving at the final concept. Working collaboratively, our designers were able to evaluate different design solutions until arriving at an optimal shape that would offer the best solution against a set of benchmarks, including budget impact.

Camp Adventure’s forest tower has won a host of awards including the German Design Council Best of Best (Concept), the Visionary Architecture ICONIC Award 2017 and the South Coast of Denmark's Best Tourism Initiative 2018.

Established in 2013, Camp Adventure is home to Denmark’s largest treetop climbing park. The Tower is part of the park’s ambition to deliver a range of top-notch nature experiences, including climbing adventures and other outdoor activities.
