Heathrow's newest landmark, the £2.5 billion Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal, has opened to the public.

The first flight from United Airlines, UA958 from Chicago, landed at Heathrow at 5:49 am on the 4 June – marking the start of the transition to the new terminal building.

Arup worked in partnership with Heathrow’s operational readiness team, and coordinated with over 160 different stakeholder organisations, to ensure that the terminal is fully functioning from day one.

Arup and Heathrow trialled and tested all the Heathrow processes as well as delivering familiarisation training for the 24,000 airport staff who work at the new terminal. Arup also helped Heathrow develop its own operational readiness capabilities and will continue to support the team to ensure that the opening, airline relocation and operation of the new terminal runs smoothly providing a positive passenger experience.

As the UK’s only hub airport, millions of people rely on Heathrow to connect them to the world. The new Terminal 2 building known officially as “Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal” is designed specifically around the needs of the passenger and will transform the traveller experience. Time-saving technology, remarkable design and inspired architecture all make for a great passenger experience; with three waves of check-in, more space at security and open gates to make the passenger feel more in charge of their journey.

Today’s opening marks the start of a carefully planned sequence of airline migrations to the new terminal building. The opening of such a large terminal is a major undertaking but our operational readiness team has, and will continue, to work alongside Heathrow to maintain the smooth operation of the facility and quickly resolve any issues that may arise. We wish Heathrow well and we look forward to our continued work together. ” Stephen Pollard Arup

Nearly 60 years after she opened the original Terminal 2, Her Majesty The Queen will officially open Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal on 23 June 2014. The terminal is the latest phase in Heathrow’s on-going transformation and once operational, two thirds of Heathrow’s passengers will be using new terminal facilities. Over the course of 6 months, 26 airlines from across the airport will move their operations from their current terminals into their new home.

Arup’s work at Heathrow Terminal 2 follows on from the successful openings of terminals in Dubai, Mumbai, Dublin, New York, and Perth. Operational readiness programmes typically involve coordinating and structuring a multitude of requirements and activity taking place at different times throughout the project, and getting different teams of airport staff working collaboratively towards a common goal. This involves widespread stakeholder engagement activity, robust programme management skills, and use of a partnership approach, which have all contributed to our successful track record in aviation work globally. ” Tara Durnin Director and Global Operational Readiness, Activation & Transition (ORAT) Leader,
