The former warehouse converted into a cultural and leisure centre at the heart of Bilbao has been awarded by the Urban Land Institute Europe Conference, a non-profit research and education organisation that annually grants these awards recognising buildings that stand out for their excellence.
Azkuna Zentroa, known as La Alhóndiga, is the only European centre that has managed to obtain this recognition among the 145 presented. For the building’s refurbishment Arup provided structural, mechanical and electrical engineering design.
Considered one of the most excellent centres in the world, the building stand out for its uniqueness, the transformation of the space and its cultural contribution. The building combines cultural, sports, catering and commercial uses, thanks to which it has become one of the centres of activity of the city.
