Arup Sydney has launched its latest exhibition ‘Sustainable Happiness,’ drawing inspiration from founder Ove Arup’s reflections to engage employees, clients and collaborators around the existential question, ‘Why are we here?’

The exhibition explores what we value, what gives us purpose and adds meaning to our day, and where we can act collectively to ensure the happiness of future generations.

Arup Board Member and Champion for Sustainable Development Kerryn Coker explained that Arup people are passionate about having a positive impact on the world around them, and that the exhibition is a chance to share the things that matter with one another.

“The Gallery is a deliberate conversation starter within our office and this exhibition brings an added dimension: it captures the issues that matter to us through the eyes of our own people,” said Kerryn.

More than 150 photographs suspended in a wave-like form show moments of meaning to Arup’s employees – making statements on what they enjoy, but also pointing out that there are some worrying trends which we must collectively act on.

Arup’s NSW Marketing Manager and Gallery Curator Neelam Gopalani said that from the outset the program set out to engage the creative network across Arup in the design of the space.

“We all bring our own unique viewpoint and sense of purpose, but we are ultimately all part of something bigger – together we can affect positive change in the context of some of the global challenges,” said Neelam.

“It has been interesting to see the themes that have emerged and the overwhelming commitment to challenging ourselves and our clients around shaping a better world.”

Only a step away from the mesmerising wave, visitors are invited to press on the touch-capacitive mural to hear Arup’s employees answer these big questions and contribute their own sentiments to a growing and evolving collection of thoughts around ‘Sustainable Happiness.’

The Gallery is one way Arup is opening its doors to greater collaboration and to exploring global issues from a different perspective.

The exhibition will remain at Arup’s Gallery at 151 Clarence Street until November, with activations and programming encouraging us to work together on those things that bring us purpose and that we are passionate about.

If you do what you like, and like what you’ve done, then life will be happiness and fun. But it will not last that much I can tell, unless it makes others happy as well. ”
