Working with Architect Penoyre and Prasad, Arup provided a range of services including mechanical and electrical engineering, communications, lighting, wind engineering, acoustics and controls services for this specialist paediatric clinical and outpatient facility.
The project comprised a theatre recovery area, outpatients department, research laboratories and patients' family overnight accommodation.
Working alongside live environment
An important aspect of this project was undertaking demolition and construction adjacent to a live environment on four floors of the existing hospital with functioning operating theatres in close proximity.
There were challenges posed by a restricted site within a conservation area, between the existing Moorfields Eye Hospital and nearby UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. The internal layout of clinics and necessary connections to existing operating theatres and research facilities were also carefully designed.
Specific engineering requirements included the provision of screened room and the consideration of wind and acoustic effects on the highly-innovative façade and its specialist lighting.
