The automotive manufacturing facilities in Rayong province, Thailand were built as part of General Motor’s (GM) expansion strategy into emerging markets. Arup was appointed to provide multi-disciplinary engineering design and construction management services for two car plants concurrently.
Each plant boasts a building area of 75,000m² including a press shop, body shop, assembly building, stores, utilities, and administration and welfare facilities. Both plants, initially built for an output of 90,000 cars per year, will ultimately expand to 150,000 cars per year.
This was a fast-track project with ambitious overall construction time of just over two years from initial works to operation. To meet this target, Arup’s design teams in Thailand and the UK worked closely with technical departments within GM’s subsidiary Opel in Germany as well as the local sub-consultants. With seamless global cooperation, the project was successfully delivered on time and within budget.
