8 Chifley – Our first collaboration with Richard Rogers architects in Australia – one of Sydney’s greenest buildings.
Arup came to Australia in 1963 to undertake the structural design of the Sydney Opera House and we now work from seven offices across four key areas of influence: cities, connectivity, health, resources. Our desire to shape a better world ensures our clients receive smart design ideas with a social purpose, which will have a positive influence for current and future generations. We recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history of our region, and Arup's Indigenous Employment Strategy articulates our actions to broaden employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians into, and within, the firm.

Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, but its residents are quick to claim the city's unofficial status as Australia's capital of sport and culture. Arup's portfolio of local work supports the notion – flagship projects include the Melbourne Cricket Ground, AAMI Park Stadium, the National Institute of Circus Arts and the Melbourne Recital Centre.
With so many performing arts projects, it's no surprise that the office has a SoundLab – Arup's unique aural visualisation tool, which allows clients to experience the acoustics of proposed building designs before they are built.
However, the firm's contribution to Melbourne is not just about structures or infrastructure – Arup specialists have advised on building security and evacuation strategies, fire engineering, lighting and a huge range of consulting services.
Arup's sustainability specialists have delivered cutting-edge projects such as the 2008 update of the City of Melbourne’s "Zero Net Emissions by 2020 Strategy", and the carbon footprint analysis of the 2009 Australian Open grand slam tennis tournament. Meanwhile, its planning team combine local work with international projects such as the masterplan for Rim City, the development of a 900-hectare greenfield site in Malaysia.
